A MOORISH-INSPIRED ROOM
SULTAN'S OFFICE One of the well-lit booths at the interior design exhibit Asian Interiors (SM Megamall) is an executive office designed by BEN L. MOJICA, an Advanced Class 94 student of the Philippines School of Interior Design. According to him, "it is an executive room befitting royalty like the Sultan of Brunei."
The Moorish-inspired setting has an interesting interior architecture which lends a good background to the handcrafted pieces of furniture. The imaginative floor pattern is achieve by a combination of tiles and polished narra planks. Defining the alcove windows are a couple of pointed Moorish arches supported by three slim twisted column design is also repeated on the pieces of furniture and on all four corners of the room to enhance te tent-like canopy above. The use of shirred fabric for the window and cieling treatments softens an otherwise hard all-wood setting.
The dark polished pieces of furniture with Moorish patterns have gold leaf accents. A huge executive office table dominates the room. A comfortable high-back executive chairs is set behind it while a couple of armchairs for the guests flank an occasional table with a stylized Okir design. sets against the silk-like papered wall is a tall open shelf-type cabinet with three scalloped arches.
The accessories are kept to a minimum. To mention a few, an Arabian horse stands on the occasionally table while the executive table is sparsely accessorized with desk top paraphernalia. Books, decorative plates, boxes and other deck the back cabinet.
Like the Egyptian, Chinese and other period styles, the Moorish design is a class of its own. It is rich with design
elements developed through the centuries in Spain (Alhambra), the Middle East and the other crossroads of Islamic culture. It is a distinctive style popular down south which can be an alternative decorating tool for grand tropical setting, too. ---
